Take up your cross

Take up your cross

Mark 8:22-38

  • An unusual healing,
  • A Rollercoaster
  • A call to action for the disciples, and for us today.

Scene 1 – Healing the blind man
We find Jesus and the disciples in Bethsaida. A blind man is brought to Jesus for healing.
This time the miracle wasn’t immediate, and we see Jesus asking if the miracle was successful.
Just because we don’t get an immediate miracle, it doesn’t mean that God can’t, or won’t help us

  • it may be that He wants to help by taking us through a process, or journey, with Him.

Scene 2 – Peter’s Rollercoaster

Peter answered and said to Him, “You are the Christ.”
Peter knew, beyond doubt, that Jesus was the Messiah. This confession was a revelation from God.
But Peter was not happy to hear that the Messiah came to but to suffer and die. Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him.
But Jesus rebuked Peter, saying, “Get behind Me, Satan!”
Jesus was well aware of His upcoming suffering, and did not want His disciples to be working against the very purpose for which he came to Earth.

Scene 3 – Take up your Cross

Peter was trying to save Jesus’ life, which sounds great from an earthly perspective.
But would undermine God’s great plan for the Messiah to give people eternal life, which is available for everyone only through Jesus’ death on the cross and his resurrection.
Just as Jesus had his focus on God’s purposes, even to the point of sacrificing His life, we also need to focus on God’s purposes for our lives, not our own.

  • If we are seeking God for a miracle, and it’s taking longer than we think it should, keep praying.
  • It is important to know what the Bible says.
  • Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
