Smyrna – The Persecuted Church

Smyrna – The Persecuted Church

Revelation 2:8-11

Letter to the church of Smyrna

The name Smyrna is related to Myrrh

Represents the Church Age of the Prophetic Church, up till the time of Constantine.  110AD – 318AD

Jesus´ presents His character of once being dead, and is now alive. This was encouraging for the church whose attendance was in decline because its members were being persecuted and killed.

Commendation: Jesus knows their works, tribulation and poverty.

What is true wealth?  The people of the church of Smyrna were rich in heavenly treasures.

Correction: No correction from Jesus.

The church was in persecution for 218 years under the Roman Emperors, because the Christians would not worship the Emperor, and so were blamed for the bad things that happened throughout the Empire.

Exhortation: do not be afraid of death – Jesus will give them the crown on life.

Promise: whoever overcomes will not be hurt by the second death.

What can we learn for us today?

1. Persecution

  • the persecuted church is still alive today. Christians are being killed today for their faith
  • Sometimes suffering is persecution from the enemy
  •  Sometimes the devil will put obstacles in your path to try and make you give up your faith.
  • We need to keep faithful till the end.

2. Compassion

  • Jesus shows us people who are suffering or struggling need to be brought comfort, not judgement.

Polycarp was a disciple of John, and was the pastor of the church of Smyrna. He refused to offer incense to Caesar, saying that Jesus was faithful to him all his life, he will be faithful to Jesus till the end.
